Medeco Impressioning?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Medeco Impressioning?

Postby fgarci03 » 14 Jun 2013 20:45

So,

I got a Medeco level 2 a couple of days ago with no keys. I got a blank too.
Has anyone ever impressioned one of them? Is it doable for someone like me (dumb, idiot and willing to learn?)

I heard about a method that you only impression it to the sheerline and make the cuts wide enough to allow the pins to rotate. then wiggle/rake/shake the key inside the lock till it pops. Like a rotational rake. Has anyone did this too?

I only have one blank for now, so I'd like to make something cool out of it!

Thanks
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

A guy who claimed to work as a locksmith at NSA in the 1980's told me a tale of him doing exactly what you described. I could never wrap my brain around how the angles would set, he said "they pretty much set themselves" I was told this story when I had just gotten into locks back in 2006, so I didn't yet know enough about locks to be able to worry about the details of how it was done or the story's validity.

One thing is true, Medeco blanks are harder and better metal than traditional keys such as Schlage or Kwikset. I dont know if that would mean the little tiny black impressioning marks would not appear as well on the key blade, or if all locks impression pretty much the same (disregarding the angles for now)

Sounds like a really fun project, perhaps you could even write a paper or make a Han Fey style .PDF about your findings =)

Thanks Squelch!

BTW, I don't mean real impressioning necessarily. I will get the plug out and work with it

Now that we've talked in the chat room, I understand what you mean. Show us some photos of the progress =)
