Got bored changing oil so made a cut away

Postby alockguru » 4 Aug 2013 12:08

Had to change the oil so figured I'd kill some time and finally attempt to do a cut away. So I got a old brass sc1 cylinder and clamped'er in the vice:

All you need is a dremel, a few cutting blades & a file or two.

I recommend taking all but one pin stack out from the lock. (you need at least one to keep it from spinning) IF you don't want to cut your pins then Cut the 4 empty spots, then move the stack to a spot already cut so you can cut the last spot with out cutting your pins.

Put it back together then mark where you need to cut. I don't know the measurements I just eye'ed it. I Imagine you could just measure to the center of each hole on the plug then mark those measurements on housing.

I got caught up in the moment of cutting so I failed to take pictures as I cut each slot but don't worry! just imagine a dremel slicing away at brass... It all looks the same :) Just keep a steady hand and move slow, it will cut away pretty fast. After putting it back together the first time I noticed my cuts where not wide enough and was able to see just how much more I could shave off. I filed away some from the top and also filed a few random area's to clean them.

End resaults:

its tolerance is a little bigger but it seemed to pick about the same.

Glad you took the time to make a cutaway. Your advise to take your time is good. Also, if using a dremel with the lock in a vice, you can try bracing your hand against the side of the vice to keep the dremel at a fairly set distance from the vice/lock to keep the cut consistent.

Keep up the work!

My experience when it comes to cutaways is that when you cut you have to be careful and precise, but once you start the cutting it's commit or screwup. Every time I hesitated during the actual cutting the results suffered :)
So confidence! :)

PS.: I use an angle grinder with 1mm blade, I can recommend it, it works great. It eats away brass really fast so be careful.
Basically the ideal way is one swift, smooth, continuous movement. (Hopefully at the correct place :D .)
To infinity... and beyond!

That's awesome work freehand. I've tried, but I ended up getting a Dremel Drill press attachment (Limited workshop space and budget):

Which is the only way I can get cuts as straight as yours.
