Sargent and Greenleaf Environmental Padlock Key made

Postby GWiens2001 » 18 May 2013 17:47

First, my thanks to macgng, from whom I got the lock, to Squelchtone, who posted much of what I have learned about these locks, and to BosnianBill, for his video on making keys for these locks.

Recieved this lock last night and picked it. Won't repeat those pictures. Made a preliminary key during slow time at work. I'll make a nicer key when I get some brass stock. For now, this will have to do. Used one of the metal guide rods that I kept from my son's crib. Why throw away good metal? The bow is just a washer.

For those who don't know how large this lock is, here are pictures of the lock next to a ruler. First metric:

Image

The shackle is 14,22mm thick!

Image

And for those of us in the United States:

Image

Yes, over a half inch thick shackle. 8-)

Image

Is this that roll pin to be removed?

Image

There are no roll pins inside the shackle hole. If that is the roll pin that needs to be removed to disassemble the lock, there won't be no gut shots of this lock. That roll pin Is tiny!

Image

That's all, folks!

Gordon

Your key looks MUCH nicer than the one I made.
I used the handle of a broken key extractor.

Good job key looks great.
Roll pin to disassemble the lock is a bad design if one wants to service it.

Would think they would make it easier to do.
Maybe newer ones do have the pin in shackle hole for easy cyld removal.

Gordon inspired me to not only get one of these cool S & G Environmental padlocks, but to also try my hand at making a key for it. So here are the results. They pale in comparison to his usual mastery of everything, but maybe one day I will get a bit more handy at making tools/keys.

Got my lock:

Image

The first thing I did was make a horrible key from a cut pen...

Image

Image

To my amazement, it actually worked, sort of. But I wanted to actually make something I was at least a bit proud of, so I got some metal doweling and began filing away at it. I did all of this after watching Bosnianbill's youtube video on the subject and reading Gordon's, Squelchtone's, and others comments, of course. I couldn't find a washer, so I just used a quarter for the time being. It is a bit crude, but this is my first attempt.

It works surprisingly well! I have to say I am proud of the job I did no matter how gnarly it is. At least it works, and now I have a key for my lock.

Image

Thanks for the great info on this subject Gordon and Bosnianbill, not to mention all the other people who have written and posted pictures on these cool locks! You guys are really inspiring to me. I hope this gives hope to anyone out there who is thinking about trying to make one of these. If I could do it, you can too, trust me!

Very cool I will have to get one and try my hand at making one too.
I like the looks of those locks.

@PR,

Nice job on the key! I especially like the one made from the pen for the improvisation.

Have used copper tubing, brass tubing, a wood dowel, a large cotter pin and metal slide bars from what once was my son's crib. (The full set is made from that crib part!)

Keep up the good work!

Gordon

Thanks Gordon! I also tried using a big pencil (didn't work  ), got a wooden dowel, but descided to try to make something that will actually last. I think it is awesome that you have a whole set from your son's old crib! That is one you will hold on too and he can inherit later in life. Very cool. :D
