Help needed identifying Yale Lock

I have this Yale lock with only one key (made in South Africa) and need another key cut. Have been to two good locksmiths in Toronto Ontario area and both literally said "Wow" and told me they cannot find a key blank which means they cannot cut the key. Please help me in identifying the lock so I can help the locksmith find a blank.






The lock has what I believe to be L1466 stamped on the barrel. Lock size is 30 x 40 x 14 mm (1 1/4 x 1 5/8 x 5/8") excluding the barrel.

Looks to me like it would use a flat steel blank, like a ZA series lock, commomly found on sheet metal garage doors.

I am amazed that your "good locksmiths" could not make a key for that lock. Try a third "good locksmith" or move up to the catagory of "really good locksmith".

The key for that can be made from any piece of flat steel that is the right thickness to fit the keyway even if you cannot find the right blank. Any other flat steel or safe deposit blank that is approximately the right thickness and length can be cut down to fit.

That's a Yale locker lock. Any locksmith should be able to file out a key for that. Now whether it is worth their time is another story. The difference between a hobbyist and a locksmith is that the locksmith turns down jobs not deemed profitable. If it is going to take 45 minutes to make a key for a $15 lock it is deemed not profitable. If you don't mind paying for the key though and let them know that, I'm sure it is a simple but tedious job.

I don't throw out keys, as I'm sure many of you don't, plus I've bought a few boxes of old keys at auctions. I have tonnes of these flat keys, send a pic of the key if you can.


Also, These guys, are spot on, Fairly simple, but not 'profitable'

i say this in quotes, because if it was my shop, i'd be eager to do any job, because when your house gets broken into (God forbid) who do you think they are going to remember? The guy who took the time to cut an old key for an old lock.
