Lock Standards

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Lock Standards

Postby robmart » 31 Mar 2014 18:00

Are there any standards for locks? For example are the plugs in locks across different manufacturers based on a standard size and design? Are the cylinders across different manufacturers based on a standard size and design? If so are you aware of any resources that explain the standards.

Thanks so much.

There are some standard sizes for some lock types, but that does not mean that it will be followed by everybody. Many locks use a 1/2" diameter plug, but some do not. Most deadbolts and euro-profile locks use standard pin diameters, but again, some do not.

Also, just because a plug is the same diameter doesn't mean the depth and spacing is the same or that the geometry of the front or rear of the plug will be the same. Basically, it's safe to assume that there will be little or no interchange of plugs between manufacturers.

The format of the cylinder itself is more likely to be standard, for example euro profile, rim, and mortise cylinders are standard assuming you have the right length. Most key in knob/key in lever cylinders are similar but may have different tail pieces which may or may not be changeable depending on the design.

What part of the world are you in? Things vary considerably in the US vs. UK or Europe.

There are exceptions to every rule, including euro-profile cylinders and KIK cylinder sizes, too. And Spandexwarrior is right that the length of the plug, the spacing between pins, and depth of cuts vary as well. So does the angle of the tips on the key pins, which can change the angle at which the ramps of the key must slope.

Thanks for the info, that is what I figured based on what I had seen out there. I am in North America. I was just tinkering with a project to add some intelligence to the locks of my house and I was wondering if the solution worked well if I could replicate it and sell it to other DIYers and I was hoping that the parts would be compatible with other locks out there.

What are the most widely used cylinders out there?

For the residential home market in the United States, probably Kwikset and Schlage.
