ACE 40mm lock, do anyone heard of it?

Postby yno » 2 May 2014 14:33

he guys!
first of all, i just wanna say that i'm quite new to lock picking:) it's a little bit strange because was interested in locks since i was a child, and you can see that i signed up to the site in 2006, but it wasn't till last month that i got my first cheap picking set and started to practice:)
so, i have this lock...it's hard to tell by the pictures but the logo is ACE and on the front is written "40 mm, made in china". i was able to pick this lock 3 times by now, but with quite a struggle, and it would be great if you could help me to understand what am i dealing with? how many pins and what type of pins? do someone here may happen to come across this lock before?

I had one of these recently without a key, it has 4 pins, after picking it a bunch of times I tore it apart and found that it had couple serrated and spool drivers.

tnx for the fast reply! so my guess was correct...i had a hunch that it has serrated and spool drivers...
BTW, do the locks become more pickable after few tries of picking or is it just me really getting better?
sounds like a dumb question, but i really can't tell. i try to "shake" the lock (cw and ccw) with the tension wrench to make sure all the pins got released but still it feels much easier to pick the lock after few tries.

Serrated? No way! LoL They felt like spools to me. I'm sure they have spools in them.

I have quite a few ACE locks in my collection and all the ones I have are 4-5 pins(depending on size/security level listing) with spools. The only ACE locks I've seen with serrated spool pins are the ones that look like American padlocks(even the key)and have a removable core that comes stock with 5 pins but an option to drop in a 6th.

Also as you pick the same lock over and over you start to get the feel for that lock and learn the set order to open it so it seems easier only because you now know with each pick what it's trying to tell you. I have a couple of locks I use as sanity checkers to see if I'm just having a bad day because I know the set order and when to fluctuate tension or what the best tension is for those particular locks. So also on that note it's good to have a wide selection to keep you on your toes and keep improving!

ACE hardware does have those locks pinned with spools and sometimes their solid body locks have serrated pins, too.

I knew it was too good to be true. :| I was just about to go pick my way into Ace hardware and take all the Ace padlocks sometime soon, but they're just spools.

I have the pins at home, I'll check after work but I'm pretty sure it had some serrated drivers as well.

I had them mixed up with another lock, it had 4 pins, 3 spools and one regular driver.
