Flea market wafer lock haul.

Postby cheerIO » 12 Jul 2014 16:02

Hello all,

Had a pretty good day at the flea market. One of my vendors that keeps an eye out for me came through.

Got a Mobile Mini ContainerGuard Lock. I guess a copy of an American 2000 series puck lock but actually pinned up with 6 pins. Thing weighs 2lbs 2oz and came with a Mobile Mini branded key.

An old SAFE wafer padlock. Very easy to pick. I can't figure out how it locks. As you can see in the picture, there are no cuts in the shackle for a latch to lock into.

Also a Yale Junior Disc Tumbler. Haven't been able to pick it yet. I think a couple of the wafers may be sticking. It is a nice well used lock though.

And finally some kind of gas cap with a wafer cam lock on it. It's really heavy brass or bronze, has two working keys and a chain that falls into the neck of the tank to keep it attached.

Gas cap is from a semi truck. I think they use National cam locks sometimes.

Cool! thanks for the info. I was looking at that and thought It may be for a fuel tank as it seems to have fusible links in it incase of fire.

The ContainerGuard lock is too easy to pick. It is six pins but no security pins that I can feel. I will drop some serrated ones in there if my American pinning kit ever gets here.

The Yale Junior turned out easy to pick after some WD40. I would really like to make a key for this one but I can't figure out how to disassemble it. I can't see anything down the shackle hole and there are no pins or anything that I can see on the outside. It unlocks by a 1/8th of a turn of the plug which moves a small latch out of the shackle so it looks like a simple wafer cam lock. But I can't figure how to get it out of there. Any one have experience with these?

The SAFE padlock likely has it's locking latch deep on the 'heel' side of the shackle. I could only speculate as to the reasons why the manufacturer designed it that way but it does make shimming very difficult since most shims won't reach that deeply.

Yale padlock should be very easy to impression a key for. Flush it out with lubricant then dry the lube out with brake cleaner and then it should impression very easily.

Should be able to read the 5 wafers - most probably 4 depths. If 2 or 3 depths found only, assume shallowest one is 'blank' and cut the others. If it does not work, drop them one level, and perhaps repeat.
