KW9, KW10, KW11

Hey fellow lockies,

I was buying keyblanks for my duplicator and I came across the 6 pin kwikset blanks in KW9, KW10, KW11. AFAIK they are all interchangeable, KW9-11 will also work with KW1... So does anyone know why there are three part numbers?

The KW10 is just a KW1 with a wider key bow to make it easier to turn the locks. Think, but not positive, that the KW9 is a 6 pin KW1. Too lazy to walk out to the garage and check.

Interchangeable. KW9 is the original Titan key, the KW10 is the more commonly used one now. The KW11 is the same but with the older Kwikset head. We usually buy the KW10 in lots of 500, the KW11 in a box of 50 and we never buy the KW9.

Okay... one more question.... What about the KW5- it looks like a KW1 with an oval head? And the KW6- it looks like a KW9-11 without the offset shoulders? I have never seen these in use before. LOL

KW5 is the 6 pin Kwikset Winston key. Winston was an attempt by Kwikset to get into the lighter end of commercial locks. KW6 is the 5 pin version I think.

Take a close look at the shoulders. IIRC, the oval head one won't fit all the way into a KW1 keyway, so if you dupe a KW1 on it, it won't work without filing the lower (?) shoulder.
