Schlage Deadbolt Info

Postby onionz » 19 Jan 2015 10:31

I just ordered some picks and want to try them out on my apartment deadbolt. It is a schlage and looks to be old. I think it has a master key. Would this be a bad lock to learn on? Could I potentially damage the lock by picking it? Does anyone have any info on this lock?

Hi,
As you are new here, you probably haven't found all the posts that say things like "dont pick your apartment door, especially if it is master keyed, because it can break the lock and the landlord may not give you your deposit back, or the least you have some explaining to do" The lock may be on *your* apartment, but it probably isn't your lock to be picking on.

here's a graphic I made a long time ago to illustrate this issue:

Resist the urge to practice on your own door, it is a lock you rely on for safety and security. It would be bad if it got messed up and you coulnt lock up when leaving for the day, or wouldn't unlock in case of a fire/flood/maintenance emergency or something.

Buy a deadbolt for $10-$15 at Walmart or Home Depot, Brinks and Defiant are good ones to start on, and practice picking on them instead, plus you get to sit on the couch and do it, and not crouch in front of your door looking suspicious.

Also, your lock is not that old, just beat up. available at Home Depot for $40.

What picks did you order?

Why yes I did miss that post! Here is my order. I bought individual picks to save a few dollars.
Individual Standard Double Ball Lock Pick - SP-04
Individual Standard Large Diamond Lock Pick - SP-06
Individual Standard Small Diamond Lock Pick - SP-07
Individual Stardard Long-Hook Lock Pick - SP-08
Individual Standard Short Hook Lock Pick - SP-09
Individual Standard L-Rake Lock Pick - SP-12
Individual Standard Key Extractor - SP-13
Individual Standard S-Rake Lock Pick - SP-11
Individual Standard C-Rake Lock Pick - SP-10
Tension Tool - TW-01 1
Tension Tool - TW-11 1
I bought the double ball because my car uses wafer tumblers.

ugh, should have asked us before buying.. you don't need a large hook or a large diamond.. like ever. oh well too late.

as for your car using wafers.. you may be thinking that if you get locked out you can pick your way in? This is a common thought that we see here, and all I will say is that it is better to keep a spare key in your wallet, than a pickset in your pocket at all times.

Thanks Squelchtone. Lots of good info there. I'm gonna pick up a Master #3 and a deadbolt. That should keep me busy.
