Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

new masterlock

A friend showed me these new master locks the other day. I don't know if they have been discussed on here yet. They claim they cannot be shimmed. Even then the outer shell has screws that can be removed. I have not taken one apart to know what lies beneath the shell. The lock is over all cheap and the part that engages to keep it locked is plastic. I could see that just by looking into the opening. It may be possible to pull on it hard enough to break that plastic. The most interesting thing is the combo is not a typical dial.

Personally like the SpeedDial locks. They are by no means high security, but they are absolutely unshimmable in my experience. Have taken one apart, and they are really cool inside. Even had Snowyboy make a cutaway of one. Pictures of that are here on the site.

You can change the combination to be as many or as few moves as you want. There are a few videos on YouTube of using a wire to 'pick' them. They are bogus. They simply set the combination to no moves.

They do come in handy for our gates at home. We no longer need a key or a light to open them at night. My wife likes the keyless aspect. And as for security, why put a high security lock on a gate that any 8 year old kid can climb over? But it does work well for our power circuit breaker box outside the house. The other people in the neighborhood have had kids shutting off their power at night as a 'prank'. Not us, though. (Also, motion activated lighting helps, too.)

They are not expensive. About $7 USD from Home Depot. For the price, why not? If you need real security, get a real lock like a Kasp 190 or an Abloy PL362. But for simple things, or for the visually impaired, these are hard to beat for the price.

Also, the part that keeps the shackle locked is NOT plastic. It is fairly thick steel plate.

Read my post and you will see that it is not secured with a piece of plastic, but with a heavy steel bar.

Most of Master Lock's current combination locks are quite difficult to shim (I won't say "impossible" but certainly beyond my ability) and even their low end keyed locks are getting quite difficult to use any of the usual bypass tricks on and they have even made some headway in making decoding more difficult. Of course the pick resistance of their keyed cylinders hasn't improved in ages (and has gotten worse in some cases).

When I was in school I recall having a couple of my 1500's (the classic Master Lock dial combo padlock) break and discovering that the wheels inside (which determine the actual combination and keep the catch from releasing the shackle) were made from plastic but that was quite a while ago and all of the current 1500's seem to be much more robust.

If I had any money to spend on locks I would happily take some Abus locks at that price, I love Abus' stuff.

thanks for the info. If the piece is not plastic I don't know what it is that I was seeing. It looked like the pin that engages the shackle though.

It is not a pin that engages the shackle, but a sliding metal piece. The following picture has been cropped so only the piece in question is displayed.
