False set blocks pins behind it.

Postby Nightingangel » 29 Feb 2016 9:21

Hello all. Here's the situation. It's a no name lock. It has 5 pins, some spool some serated from what I can feel. The problem is, every time I get a false set, pin 3 won't let me get my pick behind it to get to either pin 4 or 5 not sure which. I've been using the smallest tension wrench I have and can't even get past it if I rake with a half diamond or say a city. Ideas?

Photos of lock and your picks will help us. A no name to you could be something we know well and will know exactly what's in it, probably not spool pins by the way.. no name china locks often have mushroom pins. Is this a padlock or a cylinder?

Please upload pics to http://imgur.com and paste the links here.

Also, using top of keyway tension (tension wrench set on the same side of the keyway as the pins are located) frees up a lot of space to pick in the keyway. Just be sure the tension wrench is not contacting the first pin stack.

@GWIENS2001 thank you never though of that, looked it up on youtube, it was tricky keeping my tension wrench in there but once I got the hang of it it worked out. Now I think I need to buy a pry bar from peterson. And the lock looks akin to that of American say 5400 series, however has no engraving marks anywhere on it besides the bottom, LY8A. The shackle is also 8 sided and says Boron something its worn down. my wifi here is bad so hard to upload pics (deployed military)

It is tricky, but once you get the hang of it, you will rarely use BOK (Bottom of Keyway) tension. :)

You can also use wiper blade inserts to make TOK tension wrenches.

You can also make a fitted wrench out of music wire: bend a 90 degree angle and file it down so it fits the keyway snugly. (BOK or TOK.)
