Machining any keyway from straight key blanks.

Postby boolean » 8 Apr 2017 2:00

I came across an eBay listing for "straight" Schlage key blanks, which are flat without a keyway. It would be conceivable to mill any profile onto these blanks, regardless of whether it's unpatented or restricted. I purchased a few dozen to see whether I can manage to machine a functioning key profile. I've never seen an key blank of this type, except for flat steel keys. I'm wondering what their intended application would be, as searching for the model number yielded nothing as expected.

My old man used to call them slugs, they were rarely seen in my shop, maybe one every thousand keys blanks or so--
I have a few laying around, we used to save them. Thing is brass bar stock is easier to mill than nickel silver, anyhow
the way I make a key that I don't have is I start with a blank that is close, then I only hafta cut less material off it to
make it work

Have a couple of those. They made a mistake on those keys and did not cut the warding.
