Lock stuck during pinning with missing key pins

Postby stevethecatcrx » 20 Oct 2017 2:46

I was reppining an Abus 83 series core to match my other locks and had pinned 1-3 when my cat jumped onto the work bench. I managed to drop the lock and the key turned back to the lock position. Now.its stuck with no key pins in 4 and 5 and the drivers stuck into the cylinder. Ive been working all day different ways of getting it open to no luck. Is there any known solutions to this problem or is it a dead core now?

Is the core out of the padlock? and is the plug all the way into the sleeve? You'll have to get a nice deep hook and pick the plug. for the driver pins, just push them as high as they will go, and dont apply too much tension or you will cut or warp the springs.

Try duplicating your key on spaces 1-3 only. Leave the remaining full size. On spaces 4, 5, and 6, File the uncut part of the key down, keeping it flat, until the shear between the top pins and the springs will turn.

If you still do have one padlock working, you can take it apart and fit the plug with the top pins instead of bottom pins in spaces 4, 5, & 6. Remove the plug from the housing to prevent reoccurring cat attacks goofing this one up also. This way you can file the blank down exactly to the correct height.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

It's possible to push the driver up with a postal hook and use a shim get the lock open. Since they are spools, push the driver up, then advance it until it hits the next pin, and back off a bit so the next driver can be pushed up. Once you get to where the pins are OK, continue to shim or use the key to get the lock open if you can push it in with the shim in place.

Here's the tool that's appropriate

You should be able to push the driver up high enough

Lots of room to shim!
