Antique Sargent padlock, please help.

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Please advise?

I am very amateur at lock picking. I was looking for advice on the best way to open this lock.

I appreciate any advice. I would like to unlock it. Remove the pins and lock assembly. Take some good measurements and reproduce a key.

I believe i need to unlock the lock before I dissemble it?

What is the best, easiest way to unlock this lock?
(With out the key)

Thank you for your time and advice.

The easiest way is to impression a key. Squelchtone posted a link to a thread describing the process.

Thanks again.

So if you use the blanks and use a file, by the time you open the lock, you also get a working key out of it. it's no easier to "pick it" and then take the lock apart and try to make a key based on what you see inside.

Are you in a hurry to open this lock or something?

I promise we aren't holding out on you with some cool quick picking trick we aren't sharing in order for you to do more work.

That or take it to a real locksmith. By real, I mean one who understands the older locks and can make keys.

If I take it somewhere then I dont get to learn anything or experience the joy of achieving something difficult.

I had assumed (yes i know how to spell it) that being as old as it is, it would be easy to pic open.

Sounds like it is not an "easy" lock to pic?

I would like to open it up and see inside. This way in the future i have a solid understanding of what is going on inside.

How similar to the Yale lock Video i posted is this lock inside?

Thank you again for all your time and advice.

The operating principals are the same between the Yale and your Sargent. What Bill is referring to as “wafers” are actually called levers.

I am glad that you wish to learn more.

This tutorial will explain the process used. The rest comes from experience.

Actual disassembly of the lock you are trying to open is likely to be at least partially destructive. Best not to do that with a lock that is not your own.
