What locks have you picked so far? If you haven't done quite a few locks that don't have security pins I would recomend putting this one away for a while.

This lock has serrated, spool, and possibly serrated spool pins, it is not for a beginner.

hrmm .. so far i have picked a few quickset key in knob type locks .. a master lock that i cant seem to find on the website .. 4 pins .. didnt seem to have any spools .. a cheap padlock that was suprisingly hard to pick .. a corbin lock that has a ball bearing master key system and a spool or two i think (only got this one open a few times) and today i picked up the brinks and a master no. 3 .. the master no. 3 was quite possibly the easiest lock ive ever picked .. i picked it open to get the keys off the shackle =) ... i got the brinks so that i would have something to tinker with for a while ... i heard it was a pretty good lock so i decided to give it a shot

I would recommend getting a Schlage deadbolt and practicing on that until you get the feel of spool pins down.

The Brinks Shrouded Shackle is a *tough* one. For a spool lock with training wheels, I recommend the Brinks padlock which is rekeyable to match a house key (available at Walmart and you can't miss it, it comes with a small package of pins). It is repinnable to match your house key and does contain spools, although the tolerances are so miserable it is fairly easy to pick. The only trick is the shackle spring could hold a screen door shut, so you have to use a *lot* of turning force on the cylinder when you pick it. For a more of a deadbolt 'feel', I recommend opening the shackle before picking.

It also gives you some experience with re-pinning locks and if you are willing to do some tedious work, you can replace the bottom pins, top pins or convert it into a 1 to 6 pin practice lock. I bought two just to have an extensive set of top and bottom pins.
