Does any lock history buffs know where and when the first safe was invented?

There's a question with a few different answers !

Depends what you mean by ' safe '

There have been ' strongboxes ' early ones being wood with iron banding for 100's of years, and the design gradually evolved into the all metal safe.

There first UK patent for a safe is another matter - I have that info somewhere and will post it when I find it.

Thanks, by safes I mean the first box, wood or metal, that used a dial and combination.

I believe it was Linus Yale Jr (son of the Yale lock company founder) who designed the first combination lock for banks in 1862. He had already designed the first pin tumbler lock in 1861.

I thought the first "pin tumbler" lock was invented in Egypt.
