Lock to simple to pick?

Postby vantito » 16 Mar 2005 16:35

i just bought a Defiant normal lock no dead bolt or anything just two knobs and one side is key open and lock other side is just arotating lock thing. i bought it to learn/practice. when i was looking at the key it didnt look like the pins were very different in length. when i tried it it ony took a few rakes with a short hook i made from a hacksaw blade. does this mean im doing it right or that its just a really easy lock to pick?

from my limited experience i would say both. the lock sounds rather easy to pick so thats why it didnt take so long and the fact that it opened suggest the you have the basic technique right. but as others would suggest you might want to do more pin by pin picking rather than jumping right into raking first off. others have given good reseaons for this so i wont go into detail but congrats with your success and good luck with making more picks as well.

I would agree with Mikash. I think it's both. Congratulations on your first pick! Now see if you can doing going pin-by-pin instead of raking.

On the same note, I bought a padlock to practice on. The pins vary in length, but not substantially because the middle 3 pins are close to each other in length. I found a hairpin in the laundromat while doing my laundry and, without so much as bending the pin, I was able to easily pick the lock. Of course, I used a real tension wrench. Maybe it'd be fun to use a makeshift tension wrench, just to impress myself. :)
