How do you take apart a lock and padlock? I can open it, and i would like to see how it works inside.

Once you open the lock look into it. If there is a hex screw there you can unscrew it and take the lock apart. But on some cheaper locks there is not a hex screw there so your only option it to grind er open or use your superman vision and look through the lock.

If all else fails just use the internet and a little imagination

i dont own a kwikset, but i would say you need a few tools, its not an easy job, but its more difficult to explain that to do.

you will need:
a plug follower
a screw driver OR a pair of needle nose pliers
a pair of tweasers
a bag

to do the job:
look at the back of the lock, there may be a screw holding the plug in, or there may be a circlip, to take out circlips, find something to press the edges of it out and up slightly and keep pushing it off until you can get a grip on it with the pliers and take it off.
then you will need to put the key in the lock and turn it a bit to take the plug out, or you could pick it.
at this point take the bag and pull the plug out inside it so that it catches all the bits of the lock, the pins are very small and easy to lose.
then take your plug follower, put it in the back of the lock, then use your tweasers to drop springs and then driver pins in the holes in the hull that you want them in, usually you add them as close to the front, so you would leave the back 2 holes empty if putting 3 pins in a 5 pin lock, but it is up to you. once you have dropped them in, press them down and slide the plug follower forward to hold them in. when you have all the pins you want to have in the hull of the lock, put the key pins into the plug, remembering to put them in the right holes.
then holding the plug so that the pins are near the top so they dont fall out, slowly slide the plug into the hull, using the plug to push the plug follow out the back again, DO NOT pull the plug follower, otherwise your springs and driver pins will shoot out.
once you have the the pieces back together, all that is left is to put back the circlips/screws to hold it together, and get picking! :)

normally i would have told you to search for this, since its been listed in so many places, but im feeling nice, so i thought i'd type out a guide, just for you

there is a kwikset rekeying manual with pictures detailing what you are trying to do on my site located at http://nickz.homeunix.com . I will let you search here for the username and password as you will have to learn how to search sometime.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
