How do I get the core out of my Schlage padlock?

Hi

I have a Schlage padlock That I have been having a bit of trouble getting the core out of. I have taken the retaining screw out of the shackle hole, but the plug will only come out a few milimeters. Does anyone have any idea why it will not come out?

could this be from a system that has key controlled sfic function, if so pick it and then reach in and see if you can lift a pin after the last lock pin, just lift this about halfway, and see if you can turn the last section on your pick, if it turns just about 30 degrees, try to pull the whole core out the bottom of the lock, but if it is in fact controlled by the screw you are describing it may be a very old type take the screw out and tapp the lock on the bench so that any pin down in the screw hole that is at a right angle to the screw hole passing into the lock can fall into the area previously occupied by the screw. if this happens, the cylinder may come out the bottom of the lock.

its quite possible for schlage to make padlocks i suppose, it could also be a different padlock body with a schlage plug in it. who knows... google here we come!

by the way, pctures would really help, if not pivtures at least a model number and stuff so we can try to identify it

It's a Schlage and I tried the key but still no success. I will see If I can get some pictures tomorrow with my friend's digital camera. Schlage only
puts serial numbers on their padlocks. Since they are all pretty much the same with the only variation being shackle length, I dont see why they would have a model number.

Schlage padlocks - brass body, silver shackle, should say "Schlage" on the body (now it says "Kryptonite)? Part number usually PL #002 with the # being 1, 2, 3 or...4? depending on the shackle length. I don't have serial numbers on any of the ones I have on the shelf.

Nearly identical to American padlocks which take KIK cylinders except that the Amerian padlocks say "American" on them.

I'm not sure exactly what you have, but if it is what I get from Schlage, here's a bit on how to deal with it.

The cylinder at the bottom of the padlock may actually be an interchangeable core. However, even if it is not an interchangeable core it will still have a figure 8 sort of shape. Once it's apart, it may be a regular cylindrical lock cylinder with a special driver on the back and a brass 3/4 moon housing over the top.

The set screw under the shackle goes into the brass housing and that is what holds the core in.

It is not unusual for the core to fall out immediately when you take out the screw - it's also pretty common for the core to stick - especially if the lock has been used in an exterior application.

You can apply lubricant through the screw hole that will go in the correct places to loosen up the core. Also, if you have a pin punch or something sturdy that will fit in the hole you can use that to apply pressure directly to the back of the cylinder bible - maybe give it a bit of a whack.

You should not need a key - except to release the shackle - to remove the cylinder unless it is actually an interchangeable core. Hard to say that for sure w/o pictures. Even if it is I/C, you might want to try a little silicon spray to loosen things up.

It might be different than other Schlages because it does not say PL #002 on it (# being 1, 2, 3, or 4, as stated by locksmistress). I never tried to take it apart either, so I don't know if it's an I/C.
