I would just like to acknowledge a few companies, without which, a noob like me would never have had the confidence to become a lockpicker. We often malign many of the cheaper locks; Guard Security, Kwikset, Master, etc. and yet, if it were not for these locks and their disregard for any real security, where would I be?

About 30 minutes ago I revisited an old foe: Abus Discus 24/70. I had left this lock alone until I thought my skills would warrant a serious chance of success. This evening, a new poster posted a very similiar lock and I jokingly said I'll race you to open it :) Of course, in my mind I said, you better open that *explicative lock before he does. So after eyeing over what picks were best, I decided to have a serious, concentrated go, ie. I wasn't talking on the phone, watching a movie, at a stop light, while picking. I was amazed, couldn't have taken much more than a minute, and I was very methodical and slow, no rush.

I guess I have 2 points:

1. Let us look kindly on cheap locks, who among us hasn't resorted to a "confidence" builder now and then.

2. I started picking (and opened my first lock) the day I joined this site, in the last 2 months I am stunned at my progress. Yes, I have practiced a great deal, and I have really tried to study as much as I can, in the end however, I owe my success to 2 things: The advice and instruction I have received from this site, and much more importantly, the comradery, humor, and good natured ribbing that makes it a pleasure to scan these posts everyday.

Most importantly I just want to brag....Woot!!!! Abus Discus is no match for my pick-fu :D

Congrats crackman! :D

I tried to jumped to the Abus Diskus right off the Masterlocks/Kwicksets and it took me about two weeks of on-and-off picking to get it . Boy was that a struggle!

Just a cautionary note, however. Just recently I was in rural Missouri to see my mom. It is always kinda slow there, so I brought my hardest locks to work on including the Abus, which was my confidence lock for the trip (how times have changed). However my 13 year old daughter wanted to try to pick something (never having touched a pick before) and so I gave her the Abus with a warning of "its a hard lock, you need to start on an easy one, don't expect anything". Of course, through a combination of hook raking and semi-picking (she just barely understood the concepts), she had it open in 10 minutes   :!:

So, in case you don't know by now. NEVER let your girlfriend, wife or children touch your picks (and perhaps, even your dog if they have that bright look in their eyes ;-)).

Oh yes, and thank god for Kwikset. You suck so I don't have to ;-)
