Need help identifying a keyway

Postby Chronos » 17 Sep 2005 16:41

I have an old schlage key in knob lock and I was wondering if anyone could give me a few options as to what keyway it might be. By old I mean were talking 20+ years old. Thanks!

A picture would help a lot. :)

Pin tumbler?
If so, a picture of a key would also be worth a few thousand words.

Schlage Keyways

Postby keysman » 19 Sep 2005 3:18

If it is a pin tumbler Schalge you can pull the knob off, and remove the tail piece.
On the back of the plug wil be a small letter/ letters or numbers stamped. That is the key way.

If no leter/number stamped it is most likely a "C" keyway.

If it is a wafer lock ( really old!)

There are several keyways and the only way to find out is put a blank key in and see if it fits. there are only 3 or 4 keyways for the schlage wafer

Since its in a knob, I bet its one of the old schlage wafer locks. there are I think two keyways for these, but no reason to find the key blanks and make a key, just throw the lock away and replace it, it' junk, made as junk.

Actually they were VERY well made by todays standards, the lock it self is not very secure against picking , but the latch, body and internal parts are very stong ..that is why many of them are still in service after 50 + years.
I can't imagine a todays kw or look alike import being on a door for 50 years. or even 20 for that matter.
No I wouldn't put one on my front door but I might consider an interior door such as a bedroom or bathroom where security is not a real issue.
