Kwickset Ultramax 6pin

Postby treboR » 19 Sep 2005 15:54

I was wondering if any of you have any experiance with the kwickset ultramax line of locks. I have looked at these at the hardware store, and they "look" like they would be a decent challange. They are 6 pin locks with security pins. I have a couple of grade 2( ) kwicksets and a 5 pin schlage with spools.

I was just wondering if it would be a waste of money to get one of these to play with?

Are they really grade 2s? I was in a hardware store once and notice a Schlage deadbolt that said "ANSI Grade 2 Features". Features being the key word there, the lock wasn't really a grade 2, it had features of a grade 2.

All I know about these is that there's some odd feature -- isn't the sixth pin a check pin or something?

They look like an improvement to the usual Kwikcrap, but I haven't picked any. I just cant justify the purchase of any Kwikset lock, when there are far more interesting things available. However, unless they have really tightened their tolerances, spool pins in a kwikset wont add too much. Especially since the rekeying guide tells you to ONLY put them in chambers 2 and 4. Kinda takes the challenge out when you know where the factory will place them....

Are they really grade 2s?

Yes. They are the Maximum security series. One step below the ultramax.
