Sargent & Greenleaf - model 833 vs. model 831

A couple friends of mine recently obtained Sargent and Greenleaf padlocks (unrelated purchases from different vendors) when their interest was peaked by the 833 series.

As it turns out, these locks both appear to not be model 833's but rather 831's. Someone indicated to me that this may be the "civilian" variant of a lock that (from what i'm told and what i've read here on the forums) is restricted to military armory usage.

No searches on Google or here on LP101, however, turned up any information about what, exactly, the model 831 is and how it differs from the 833. The S&G web site doesn't even show an 831 as far as i can tell.

This is the numeric code stamped on the back of the locks that my friends have purchased, but does it signify something else? Is there no model 831... and thus are these really 833's?

If there are two distinct models, can anyone enlighten me as to what makes them different? (And a link to a vendor that consistently offers them to the public would be a bonus, since i believe that both of the purchases mentioned above were eBay-related. I've had difficulty finding this ultimate S&G lock for sale anywhere.)

I have the 831b in my possesion along with an 826c. The difference between the 2 is the 31 is a shrouded shackle model while the 26 is an open shackle model. The 33 if it is out there is just a newer model of these locks with maybe an updated keyway without an expired patent possibly though I am not positive.

wow, it's being sold by Coleman's... they're a terrific surplus store not very far from me. Ironic, searching all over and finding what i wanted practically next door. I imagine the difficulty i had before was related to the fact that i kept eBay-ing for the 833, specifically. I'll cruise by the Coleman store and pick up an S&G there... it's an excuse to do some more digging through their inventory. Maybe i'll pickup that deuce and a half that i've always wanted.

yes, that appears to be the case. still, i'd certainly love to know what, exactly, the differences between the two of them are.

I also have a 831? looks similiar to the 833 but not quite as beefy,
The one I have was designed to be used on a famous building in Washington DC, a gift from an ex government employee.

I will get some pics and post.

The 833 is a basically a redesigned version of the 831 that has been out of production for probaby 10 plus years. Both were desinged for Uncle to use for AAE [Arms, Ammuniton, and Explosives] and for aircraft hangar security.

Both use the Medeco cylinder and there were only two keyways.
The commercial keyway for use in non military contractor applications and the government keyway which was resticted to Fed gov.

Current list price on the 833 is over 1500.00 USD

Its a very specialized padlock so you wont see it in common use
commercial use.

The 826 also uses the Medeco cylinder and would be used in lower level applications such as small amounts of ammunition stored next a gun mount.

If you are still around the forums here, I did donate a S&G 833 to Toool.us a couple years ago. It was sent to Omikron so it should be in Toool.us's inventory hopefully. That should save you some time and money doing a direct comparison to the 831. The main differences are ease of assembly and disassembly and the 833 has some additional defense against grinding style attacks.
