Identifying lock models

is there some way to identify Schlage locks to tell if they have security pins. Its a deadbolt on my back door. I could post a pick. As i've never taken a lock apart befor i'd rather not start now on a house i rent. Its a deadbolt with a square metal plate behind it covering the door (on both sides). Anyway i could take the lock off the door no problem if i need to. So what should i look for to identify what type of lock it is.

again i'm just wondering about security pins.

the key way can be a clue to which lock you are facing but no markings on the face that i know of.

There no way to tell by the keyway to find out if a lock has security pins or not, at least on a Schlage. But from what I understand all new Schlage locks use two or three security pins in them. Some older models may not. The only sure way to figure it out is to attempt picking it and see if the plug gives a little too much for what you think was setting a normal pin stack. If this happens you probably got a spool pin in there. But since this is a lock on your property which you are renting I would go with your gut instinct and not mess with it.

yeah i have no intentions of trying to pick it (its my back door, its nice to be able to lock it) I was just wondering how you tell what 'model' of lock you have? is this not possible? is a schlage deadbolt just a schlage deadbolt or is there different models. As i said befor i could remove the lock from the door if theres a model number on the inside or something.

My plan was to then pull up info on that specific model on here or google. Is this not a concievable option?

the same key also opens my front door(my downstairs appartment) and the main front door (which my upstairs neighbors key also opens).

Our keys do not open each others front and back doors though. If that helps.

[so i have locks A and A, She has locks B and B, and the main front door has lock C. My key opens A's and C and her key opens B's and C. quite common i'm sure]

Well I'm very certain that the three locks shown here on the Schlage website will have security pins in them, http://consumer.schlage.com/products/Ca ... tegoryID=2 . As for some older version I wouldn't have a clue but post a picture of the lock if you can and maybe we can ID it for ya.

Just saw your second post. It sounds like your locks may be masterkeyed. I would not mess with that if this is the case. It can give you a very very bad day if something goes wrong.

My point was there is no way but the key way can give clues.

well its not any of those it. i kinda looks like the last one (BR-260) but it has about a half-inch straight (cylinder) part befor the lock starts to cone out. I guess thats what i'm looking for though. if there is a page like that that lists all schlage deadbolts, not just current ones.

Here are some picks. they suck though i have to use my cell tel.

well i cant read the brand, im sure if u list it a member in your area can advise. but i do hope u don't intent on picking it. i have damaged locks even recently.

did you read this thread at all befor you started posting?

I listed previously i have no intentions of picking it. Also that it is a Schlage. I can read the name brand IRL. I'm trying to find out what kind of lock it is.

Also its either masterkey's or at least part of a masterkey'd set. I am in no way shape or form going to pick this. Also notice the title of the thread.

sorry if that came off as arragant, but i'm not picking it don't worry. Is there a list of all schlege deadbolts models. like some kind of cataloge or something?

i am SO sorry. i reply to quite a few thread on here every day. im trying to help you to the best of my ability.

Your right. I don't remember the details of every thread or re read the entire thread before i post back. I base my response on what is in the above couple of posts.

so its a Schlage lock, FINE. its in a IRL knob? FINE.

But if you don't intend to pick it, and if its in a master key system (which suggests its a rented place) what exactly are you trying to achieve?
