I have this Medeco core and I was wondering what it went to. It has 6 rotating pins, but seems to have aged some (I got it on eBay for $10 used). Would I be able to install it in anything without buying Medeco-specific parts?

anything from a kwikset to any other Key In Knob (KIK) door handle will hold that core...look around for some info on who you like brand wise and see if they make KIK handles....good luck and GOOD FIND!!

I can tell from the bow of the key that its from the Omega series. That was Medeco's first attempt at patented key control. You could get exactly the number of keys you ordered, and no more. Omega was used on the medeco orginals only. From the biaxial on, they developed more sophisticated methods of key control.

Also, it won't fit into just anything, but it will fit into most things that accept universal inserts. This means most key in knob or key in lever sets, newer schlage deadbolts, and a variety of rekeyable padlocks. In particular, I would recommend the kryptonite rekeyable padlocks for that. It actually wouldn't be compatible with kwikset I don't think.

Squelchtone beat me to this answer.
If the back end of that cylinder is angled to the right, it is for the S&G 831B padlock. I just changed one out today and have to order two more.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

it will work anywhere a schlage KIK will I have both sitting in front of me right now and they are almost the exact same dimensions. The only problem I see would be having a tail (probably the wrong word but the name eludes me right now) that fit properly but you could probably modify one to fit easy enough

you can still order them? please god provide me with the part number. My medeco dealer was told my medeco that since these are a 02 keyway (military) they were not authorized to order them from Medeco. Can I order them in 00 ?
Thanks

LOL. It says here that that's a $1,200 lock. I'll probably just put my cylinder in a $10 door knob that can be easily bypassed with a hammer. jpb06080 wrote:I can tell from the bow of the key that its from the Omega series. I heard that in the early days of Medeco, a company was sued for copying keys on the grounds of copyright infringement. Is it possible to copy a Medeco key without getting in trouble?

This thread cost me $16.... I searched Google what the heck Medeco Omega is then I came across this through Google Books
http://books.google.com/books?id=UOVoq-OWQMYC
I learned Medeco keys are cut using 30mil full increments however they're cut with 15 mil increments on heavily master keyed system such as the Omega.
So, I ended up ordering that book on half.com lol

Uh, I wouldn't say that bow is from the Omega series, because doesn't one of the air/sky keyways offer the same bow? I can't remember, but I don't think its the bow that determines it, its the serial number, or the keyway itself.
In regards to what it came out of, it looks like a KIK housing/bible, but I can't clearly see the end of the plug. I guess the other guys are familiar enough with it, because they state its some sort of S&G 831B padlock. Anyone got a close photo of what thats supposed to look like? I'm always trying to expand my knowledge.

I think you're right in that it's a Sky bow.
here are a couple shots of the back of one of these cylinders and the box label.
