New order link here: http://www.security.org/book_order_special.htm****************** Following is my review of this book: digital_blue wrote:Marc Tobias and Tobias Bluzmanis have put together, undoubtedly, the most comprehensive work on Medeco locks ever to see its way to print. The Compromise of Medeco High Security Locks (Printed version: "Open in 30 Seconds") is an exhaustive, yet exhilarating venture through every corner of these previously formidable high security locks. No stone is left unturned and clearly there remains no secrets. My own journey through the pages of this book brought to me moments of utter disbelief, of forehead-slapping recognition, and of genuine laughter and head shaking.
Medeco has long been the de facto standard for high security locks in North America. With millions upon millions of locks in service the release of this book is truly earth shaking. Whether you rely on Medeco locks to protect your home or business, or are in the business yourself of supplying these locks to your customers, or even if you're simply a lock-crazy hobbyist, you must read this book. I've often seen the debate as to whether defeating locks is more art or more science. Marc and Toby have made this a science and provided the reader with all the facts, all the data, and all the evidence needed to successfully defeat a Medeco deadbolt, mortice, or rim cylinder.
Whether it's bumping, picking, or even breaking, these locks are falling open in the hands of even moderately skilled lock pickers. Marc and Toby teach us how to get past the sidebar with almost comedic ease, how to defeat the M3 slider in two seconds flat, and even some downright sneaky "tricks" that will leave your head spinning.
Marc's renowned work Locks, Safes, and Security has long been considered THE book on lock defeats and, teaming up with Toby, he has once again set the standard. It is almost certain that no work will ever come close to the depth and breadth of exposure of Medeco locks.

I truly don't know. I was unable to download the file myself, but perhaps someone much smarter than me will be able to.
If not, I'll check with Marc. I'm thinking possibly it's something to do with his server that prevents downloading it? I dunno.
But I do know that Marc was fine with others taking / distributing the file.

Even though the link ends in ".mp3" it's actually a streaming audio file, so you can't download it through your browser as you normally would.
There are several fairly trivial ways of copying audio streams... but I'd prefer to let Marc provide a downloadable copy, rather than advertise ways of bypassing his efforts (perhaps?) to prevent downloading.

Just finished listening to the entire interview: very well done! Thank you very much for organizing the interview! It was really interesting to hear some of the background behind his recent work... and I'm really now excited to get the book!

What's the copyright status of this interview? Can I use samples in, say, music?

Ummmmm.... I would have to guess that would be ok.
I know that the interview can be re-distributed. I suspect it would only be a problem if someone were to take snippets and put them together out of context or something.
But I don't think Marc would have a problem with samples being used in something musically cool, and I know I wouldn't. Just don't make either of us look bad.

P.S. Post your results... or.. at least share 'em with me tho.

I do not own any Medeco locks at this time, and don't plan on servicing/selling them.
Is there enough other info in it to justify the purchase?
Liken it to the Rubics cube. Books on solving them can still be purchased, but you will only find the cube at garage sales/flea markets.

I really enjoyed this interview. I have been very skeptical of MWT, as I feel that medeco is a quality lock, which gets an unfair rep from people. To me, MWT seemed to be the major driving force behind a seeming attack on medeco.
After listening to the interview however, I saw that Tobias is really interested in improving security for govt. applications, and considers medeco to be a high quality product, albeit one with some flaws that need to be addressed. Thanks for the interview!

From a purely academic point of view, it's still very interesting information for the hobbyist. But I guess, your millage may very.

I wonder if the revelations will serve to reduce the price or perceived value of Medeco in the marketplace.
With the stated vulnerabilities and the increased perception of risk to the marketplace, I cannot recommend their products. However, notwithstanding, the products are actually of very good quality and the perceived risk would not probably eventuate in the wider marketplace unless picks became much more commonplace and the methods of bypass or entry were found to become more commonplace, too.
Having said that, I still will recommend my preferred signature product Bilock, well before I recommend Medeco.

Actually, I would consider the destructive entry methods to be of far greater concern, at least in corporate installations. Bumping would hit 2nd on the list, with picking methods being a far distant third.
But seriously... I've had the chance to watch the videos for the destructive bypass (well, all of the videos.. but those in particular) and all I can say is... WOW.
