Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Hey. I did a quick search but could not find any information regarding this lock besides that it's best not to remove the spring cover. How else can I go about repinning? Here are the pics. http://img504.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=img0559p.jpgThanks guys! I'm eager to start learning. Sorry if I did not look hard enough.

ok, you need to remove the little c clip from the back,
if you have a key insert the key and pull the plug out with the key, if you just pull the plug out however the driver pins and springs will go everywhere, they are easy enough to get in but to avoid this use a plug follower to go in right behind the plug so the driver pins will not fall.
if you do not have a key you must pick it to remove the plug, same rules apply though, use a follower to avoid dropping the drivers.
if you cannot pick it and are wanting to repin it so you can practice on 1 or 2 pins first and you have no key the only thing to do is remove the cover...
enjoy

Well, I screwed it up and ended up dumping the pins and springs out. How should I go about fixing this? I still have all of the parts.
Thanks.

not a problem in the least, just more time consuming
I just recently got a plug follower but ive been repinnin mmy lock ferever so heres my solution
you have a tension wrench right?
get your plug pinned lthe way you want ok, put the spring in the first slot, its not hard to reach put the pin on top of it... simple enough now lower it with your tensor from the other side then slide your plug in over ti while you simultaneously slide your tensor off the pin
then toss a spring in the other side and move it in with the tensor do the same with a driver pin, and repeat pushing it down with the tensor while you slide the plug in further
the repeat till all pins are in
be careful not to drop all you keypins while doing this
you sould also put all the springs and pins in and lower them all with the tensor then slide the plug in ema ll at once but this takes a bit of practice, it dont hurt though cause if you mess up you just have to start doing it the slow way from wherever you emssed up

Thanks for the help! I was able to repin the lock, and am currently working on two pins. However, I've noticed that it's almost like picking just one pin. Sometimes my tension wrench will turn and open the lock after it feels like I've only hit a single pin. Why is this? I'm almost positive I put the pins in correctly.

maby the shaft of the pick is raising the other pin or you are accidentally raising both at the same time... i pick 5 pin kwiksets aand only raise the pick 3 times... it just happens.
im sure you ddnt pin it wrong, thats almoost impossible if you keep ypur eyes open... move to 3 and you wont have that problem lol
1 is not a lock really 2 is for feeling one shear line click withoug opening the lock 3 is for feeling the rotation in the plug and 4 and 5 are picking practice
look at it that way

Something is wrong, this seems way too easy. I repinned to three and half the time I still get it in one lift. I then tried shifting them from the very back 3 slots to the middle 3 to see if that would help. Still easy. Should I just got on to 4?

well you will find that kwikset as a whole is easy lol
but if you are confident that 3 is not a challange to you(it probably isnt) than by all means add all the pins you want. its about challanging yourself, when you are no longer being challanged make it harder for yourself. that is the only wy to improve
good luck

On those, especially if your just practicing with it and not putting it on a door, you can just pop the cap off the top and drop the pins out.

i see you have bought a double deadbolt. what is great about this is that you can leave one cylinder pinned correctly and the other you can pin randomly and pick both. i find the guide on the forum to be wonderful for beginners
that is one of the first locks i bought and i love it. its a great lock for practicing.

Haha, thanks for the help guys. 4 pins is actually challenging me at this point. Unfortunately, I screwed up one of the springs. Is there any way I could find a replacement? I don't mind leaving one of them with 4 pins since I have two, but it'd be nice to fix it anyway.

I'm sure someone on here might have some to sell (at a reduced quantity/price, of course).

Hm. I seem to be having trouble finding the pin that is currently binding. Any tips on that? Also, because of this problem I've been reading as much as I can to try to absorb some more useful information (though I know that no amount of reading will breed the kind of skill practicing does.) I came across this page: http://www.crypto.com/papers/notes/picking/He seems to suggest that you should use a special combination of locks to learn with. This is a hobby I would like to be really proficient at and learn as much as I can about. Am I doing myself a disservice by using this KwikSet lock? Will it make learning further in this field more difficult? Or am I just being silly and should get back to practicing? : P Thanks for all the help, guys. You are one of the best communities I have ever been introduced to.
