Keil New York Super Safety "Pick Proof" Lock Breakdown

Postby chriswingate » 7 Mar 2011 12:14

Hope this is the right place to post a breakdown.

Keil New York Company, Super Safety "Pick Proof" Lock.

Not sure on the history of this lock, pretty sure I read somewhere that the company was sued for false statement, and was forced to stop labeling the lock as "Pick Proof". Either way the max depth first cut, mixed with the blocking disk and interlocking first pin, and free floating stacked disk driver pins make this lock pretty interesting to pick. Here are the pictures.

Image
You can see the blocking disk right under the first key pin.

Plug with key pins, note the notch in the first key pin, and the disk it sits on.

How the key pin sits on the blocking disk.

The key with key pins, they are all the cool bomb style pins with the exception of the first pin and disk.

Image
Driver pins are free floating disks stacked around a central rod. Note the first driver pin and first key pin interlock together.

Very interesting design, thanks for taking the time to make and share these pictures :)

Basically you have to push the blocking disk to lift the first pin?

Cheers :)

Wow. Even if it didn't turn out to be pickproof, at least someone sure gave it a good try. It's nice to see attempts at innovation. Thanks for the breakdown, I haven't seen the inside of one of those before.

yeah you have to treat it like part of the first pin, problem is, its a max depth cut, so lifting it basically stops the other pins from binding, since the first pin is already at sheer.

Great work Chris - as femurat said, thanks for taking the time and trouble to photograph and post the images.

Last year a euro cylinder lock with zero lift feature was introduced in the UK - looks like Keil was there a bit earlier.

I do like the stacked disks - I presume they'd act like a serrated pin and give you multiple false sets?

Nice lock!

Cheers...

Yeah they act very similar to serrated pins, though these move around a lot too, so its get very "crunchy" inside the lock when picking.

@chriswingate:

Where did you obtain such an antique lock in such pristine original condition like that...

Definitely a good find and thank you for doing a breakdown thread about it...

I said drivers but I meant bottom pins. Some DOM have similar wired stacked disks like this lock. They're definitely fun to pick.

Cheers :)

Hi femurat - would you mind nipping into your time machine and posting all that last week? I could have had a chat with the nice lady on the Dom stand during the show over the weekend. :D

Cheers...

Theres some radical ideas there that are only just becoming mainstream in modern locks.

Great lock for the collector. 8)

So far this lock is living up to its name as far as I go. Getting anything in under that first pin to manipulate the other pins is a night mare, especially since pin four is a high cut.

This lock will probably stay in my collection, a lot of locks come and go in trades but I think this one will stay. I see a few Francis Keil and Son's Lock Co. Locks on ebay, but I have yet to see another one of these. For how old it is and the security measures it has in the lock, its very cool.
