Abloy Protec2

The "2" is not a typo , apparently there is a new badass in Finland called Protec2 , and it's patented until 2030

Hmmm, seems like that ball bearing is just for patent extension purposes, and not really any more added security. I'd compare it to the Medeco M3 slider mechanism which is easy to beat with a paperclip, but offers no more real pick protection, but this is more like the floating pin in the Mul-t-lock interactive. All that said, all the locks I just mentioned are still a bear to pick, and the Protec is just.. not pickable at all with our current tools and knowledge.

Thanks for sharing though, its always good to watch stuff about locks! =)

So it seems like the only changes are a different kind of bottom profile disc, and the disc controller itself. Interesting..

The current ones have 2 to 3 little dimple holes where the key blade meets the bow, are you talking about those, or the bearing right in the middle of the key blade?

Yeah , take a pic otherwise i call BS on this one
I don't know what ball bearing you see on your protec key , but i'm pretty sure it's not the big ball bearing that this Protec2 has on the key
This system is brand frikkin new , you probably can't find nowhere outside finland yet

Which I think it's pretty good by itself
Extremely tight key control until 2030 ? sounds good

I'm pretty confident that protec would still be the king 18 years from now
There is virtually no way in the world that either medeco, mul-t-lock or in other ASSA company able to develop any better mechanism then the protec

Yeah it's just a little dimple in the key I figured a ball Bearrings fits in there (thats what the abloy brochure shows) but didn't see one in the lock. I don't have another protec so I just assumed they are all like that. Not really exciting. No reason to get your panties in a bunch. I'll take a pic when I get home.

Looked at the brochure not on my iPhone... Nope my key is different. But the protec2 still isn't super cool enuf to get your panties in a bunch.

It's just so they can renew your contract and make you upgrade your whole system and make u pay them lots of money.

Similar to what they did with the exec and the new novel.

Just cause they add a number after the name doesn't make it revolutionary....

I don't get , whats your thing with the panties ? is it some kind of joke or what ?

And no one said it's "revolutionary" , but when you buy a new high security cylinder it's pretty nice to know that you will have asstight key control until 2030
It's not Medeco "get our blanks on ebay" phony key control , it's a real key control
I guess if Abloy want something really revolutionary they should hire some of the experts here like you

By the panties comment he meant that (in his view) it is not worth getting overly excited about (Also known as "getting your panties in a bunch")

I highly doubt there ever be third party protec blanks. Just think of how many keyways there are... It's just not cost effective.

As for "asstight key control until 2030" is only as good as the locksmith you buy the locks from... if every customer has the same keyway that's not much key control.

Similarly, from any lock manufacturer if you want to pay enough you can have your own keyway and there are no blanks available except from them, so the lockie can't just go sell them on eBay after the contract has expired.

A lot of these things always seem to come down to how much money you want to spend.

Also, you aren't getting any restricted medeco keyblanks on eBay because medeco would sue their asses for breach of contract. You don't see a box of keymark blanks on eBay do you? You might see a box of old classic keys or old biaxials, but nothing "new" like M3 or something highly restricted like keymark.
