There's a Lowe's in Ottawa, go there and buy this deadbolt for $12.97, it's the cheapest deadbolt they have and you can take it apart and learn how a lock works, you can't easily take apart most Master or Brinks padlocks.

Great advice! I just got four locks from my wife's Grandfather who is moving. He told me I could have any padlock I found. I got a Master 230, a couple of warded locks (one Master and one American) and a Dex Model 101 magnetic padlock. Scour the places you frequent. Ask friends and relatives. Many people have locks that they don't use anymore and are pretty willing to give them to you or sell them for a few bucks. I have scored many a lock like that.

An avergae quality Brinks padlock is good for a newbie. They offer some challenge for the beginner without being impossible. Good for learning both single pin picking with a short hook and basic raking with a snake rake.

This can be a stupid question but I've never seen one like the DEX.

The key shaped strangely.. Where does it go in? Does the key have magnets embeded/hidden?
Where does the key go? I can't see a keyhole where it should be:) And the keys are huge considering the lock size. Do the keys open it when they touch the side or something?
