Hi shear with bling

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Hi shear with bling

Postby G-lock » 5 Mar 2017 12:04

After doing some checking with my magnet i found out that the hi shear padlocks are made of a different metal than all of my other military padlocks & there bodies are completely non-ferrous metal. so i was thinking  if someone were to polish one of these locks it would probably never rust, but would a polished military lock look good or would it be a waste of a padlock? I had a fairly beat up hishear body with no core and some time on my hands so i decided why not. I ground down all of the welds flush, sanded every ding & scratch out of it including the numbers that were stamped into the front, then i gave it a almost mirror polish. If i knew when i started how long it was going to take & how much sand paper i would have to buy  then i would not of have done it. But now thats its done i think its definitely a unique military lock. Ive never seen another one polished.

I worked on it a few hours a day for 4 or 5 days. I tried to use a belt sander to get as much as i could but theres alot of places where hand sanding was all i could do. The recess where the shackle closes was worst part for me. I dont own many tools for this type of work so most of it was done by hand. I bet a business that does this type of work could get it done in a hour or two though.

Looks Astonishing ! !

Since it was done by hand...
I have to ask, what type of media / polishing agent did you use ?

holy fu$#@$#in sh*t!

That's quality work right there. If that lock is ever for sale or your time and effort is somehow billable, I'd love to buy that lock or send you a hi-shear body to be polished.

wow. that lock looks beautiful.

was this hand sanding or a belt sander?

Thanks for sharing!

While I will not undercut Squelchtone's offer to purchase, I would duplicate his offer to send a hi-shear body to be polished (at an appropriate amount of pay for your heavy labor.

Looks very nice now!

Is the original surface painted or darkened by some kind of chemical treatment?

Cheers

Thank you. I did what i could with a belt sander but theres alot that i couldn't reach with my sander. (I only have a 6" belt sander) I didn't notice when i started & im sure it varies from lock to lock but on all 3 of mine the only flat sides are the front & bottom. As for selling, i have alot of time into this lock. Its one of those projects that you start & a quarter of the way through you slap yourself. You realize you cant stop now & you know why you havent seen another one like it. These locks are bomb proof & here you are trying to knock it down with freking sand paper  . So im going to keep it. But your thousands of posts & answers to my questions have been a HUGE help to me in my quest to find information about many locks so i would do another for you to try & return the favor that you've done for many, many people like myself.

I dont know what its called but they have some type of green zinc or simular coating on them. Im not sure if its for corrosion resistance or camouflage though.
