Now Please correct me if I am wrong but it appears from looking at the layout of the master lock pro series, that the added secrurity features are rendered technically useless the instant the plug is turned even slightly.
It seems that the only thing it excludes is a similar looking key with out the little hole beveled in. As far as I can tell it does not inhibit picking in the least. I have a picture so take a look

Seems to me the foto is missing something... you cant have BBs rolling around back and forth inside.. must be springs not shown or something else..

It appears to be a sales ad..... not a blueprint.

Hmmm....
Although its nothing like an Assa, it kind of reminds me of one. I wouldn't imagine it to be terribly difficult to pick, but maybe slightly harder than No.3
Master lock isn't exactly a high security brand.

A flash presentation on how this lock works would be nice, maybe then we could be more helpful, or at least understand what that extra security pin does.

Yeah, that diagram makes zero sense to me.

IDN sells them
no the ball is not spring loaded
"your" key blank is dimpled in some random position along one of the wards .
the dimple correlated to a hole drilled in the plug with a couple of bearings tossed in it
basically if you insert a correctly cut key but not dimpled correctly the ball bearings are pushed out of the plug half way between the plug and cylinder housing thereby binding the plug.

So... if you don't insert it, the balls don't bind, therefore if you attempt to pick it, no difference anyways?
Only reason for that then is if you want a lot of locks keyed the same, but only a certain key to work for a few of those locks, similar to the Schlage Primus cylinder compared to normal Schlage cylinders, except in this case you don't need a modified keyblank to pick it.

not going to stop the picking
but not is not motive behind the change.
i think it is a farily simple solution and well executed by master.

So basically it's like a roundabout way of changing the keyway.

Anyone know of a thread with notes about all the different Master locks and how to ID them?
I know some are carp, but some are good, and it doesn't help that everything on here is referred to as #1, #5, etc.
I used to have a Master combo gunlock, but it was too easy to open to be worth using on anything that was dangerous. I gave it to a kid at the gun club who was annoyed because his sibling would try to sneak a go with his airgun. Three dial combo, I could pick it in maybe 30 seconds. Looked like
However, I have a four dial Master, looks like but with silver metal dials. I can't get the danmed thing open! Asked my other half to scramble the combo so I could try opening it without knowing the combo, found I couldn't, then found out she hadn't looked! So it sits totally locked, taunting me...
Anyway, the only way I know what it is is due to looking through Altavista's image search, and guessing it might be a Master because I got it from B&Q!
So, a thread or page on identifying Master locks? Any ideas?

It doesn't have my lock. It looks like a 1520 or a 1523, but it has all steel dials. I will post a picture a bit later.
Of course, this may mean it is a clone, but I don't think so, since B&Q sell mostly Master padlocks.
Also, it doesn't have the older styles, only the current range.

I think your all correct and a good lesson you can learn from this is not to be intimidated by advertising, If you read the whole advertisment, you would think " OMG! what am I gonna do, such advanced technology is now so cheap I wont ever be able to pick a lock again!"
But again thanx for all your help, and as expected I can get the lock to pop in about 6 six seconds with the trusty half diamond.
