Some Cutaways I made

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Thank you for sharing the steps you go through in making a cutaway. Did not realize how much time you spend in researching the locks. In my ignorance, thought you would just take it apart, take some measurements, and get to cutting. Shows why your cutaways turn out as nicely as they do. :D

I have not had alot of time in front of my mill due to a bad back injury, but I was feeling a little better the other day so of course I did a cutaway.
here is my first attempt at a Mindy Padlock cutaway.

Really nice work. I have never done a cutaway on a lock but this inspires me to make a demo / training lock. Do you ever use a rotary table on your mill? Mostly using endmills? How about slitting saws?

Thanks alot of it is trial and error then repeat, for almost everything I use endmills. 1.5mm carbide for the pin chambers and a 1/8" - 1/4" carbide for the lock body's depending on the size of the lock. I dont have a rotary table yet its on my wish list. I made jigs to hold lock core's so I get repeatable work holding.
all in all not bad for a hobby machinist

Work holding is the "art" of machining. Making jigs is something I find enjoyable because it includes problem solving and thinking through your work. For a quick jig I attach the piece to a 1-2-3 block that can be rotated and flipped with some accuracy. I am not a machinist but my good friend Danny was in Tool and Die for almost 40 years and is a wizard at making things with manual equipment. He is one of the last. Most young machinists focus on CNC.

One of the mods to my mill is a power feed that I made from a discarded cordless drill. I made a housing for the motor and left the clutch on it and mounted it on the end of the bed with a coupler to connect/disconnect from the threaded shaft. Then used a cheap 12v speed control to run the motor. I also added 3 axis digital readouts to the mill which also adds to repeatable results. I did not get the 3 axis controller made for mills but the much cheaper individual readouts and then made mounts to add them to the mill.

I went over to your Youtube videos and had a look at your projects. Enjoyed seeing the work you did there.
