Well yes acryllic, lexan, perspex, polycaronate etc are all good to use, if its sitting on a shelf then glass if you can drill nicely,

As mentioned earlier a poormans cover could be a cd case.

If its fo looks you could work from the back of the proper cover and draw a fancy line around the holes then simply grind away, you could make a decrotive cover that holds all the bits in place.

I do agree with you of the locks ive cutaway they have never been picked, they are just nice to look at :P
