If you do, in fact, have an american sold, kwikset smartkey (which I absolutely did not believe had been released yet) please take some photos for us? Disassemble it as best you are able (it is HARDer to pick than a normal pin tumbler, and bump proof) and submit them here?

Denver, Colorado and I bought both locks at Home Depot. Not only do they have these, they also have the biometric fingerprint reading lock (which I also believer is pretty new).

I could maybe take a few photos over the weekend.

I work at home depot one of the hardware guys told me to go check it out in the training database. I took the training course on the computer about these things and its pretty impressive. Kwickset claims there are no pins, or springs making it unpickable. There is also a finger print scanner coming out as well (with the same "Smart Series" name. that looks really cool. I cant wait to get my hands one and pick the shit out of it. Should arrive in about 2 weeks to my store here in Austin.

Well, I decided to take the lock back to Home Depot. I was hoping to get a few more suggestions - sorry people, but one person saying "oh yeah, I picked that" doesn't really help.

But prior to taking it back, I removed the cylinder and took some pictures. I didn't really feel comfortable taking the cylinder apart, but I took pics of each side of the outside. You guys don't have a way to upload images - if someone wants the pics, send me a message and I will email them to you for you to post somewhere for everyone.

When I took the thing back, the CSR said there were a few people returning them for lack of keys. Apparently an assembly issue at the plant - the person putting the keys in the box must've been sleeping. I found another box (only one other of this type) on the shelf, and there were no keys in it either! Then I went to another Home Depot in Denver and found a few more boxes there. I found one that had keys, and while I was there, there were a few people with these locks standing at counters and getting CSRs to help them.

But anyway, I like this lock a lot, and I've replaced eight of them in my house (only four more to go!). One other issue I had - I bought an expensive handleset for the front door (Arlington in Venetian Bronze). On the deadbolt, there is a thumbturn on the inside (one cylinder on outside). To attach the thumbturn to the lock, there is a small set-screw. This particular one had a manufacturing defect that prevented me from screwing the set-screw in, and I ended up stripping the set-screw in the process. I guess they still have some manufacturing issues, even in these expensive sets.

I have pics of the outside of the cylinder from each of the four sides, one of the security screw (which I have NO plans to put those on any of my locks), and one of the thumbturn with the stripped set-screw.

We normally use something like http://photobucket.com/ to put photos on this site. Just upload the pics onto your account at that website and just link it cause a lot of people have trouble posting the actual pictures here.

OK, let's see if I get the markup right:

Four pics of the outside of the cylinder - top, right, left, bottom. And a pic of the security screw. Locksmiths everywhere are gonna hate the people that install those

Also an image of the stripped setscrew for the thumbturn, which I believe is a manufacturing defect. Remember, this is a completely different lock than the original post about the missing keys in the brass double-cylinder. I've purchased eight of these locks now, and two have had problems. Several others on the shelf seemed to be missing keys as well.

If you search around hardware stores, you will find the screw driver for those and yes, the can be unscrewed very easily :)

If you are in Canada, where did you get your hands on the Kwikset version?

It's a very curious post, to be honest. :) Welcome to the forum, you've got my titillated.

Hi, I hope you found this lock by now, but I just read this thread and when I was in Home Depot today they had their shelves full of Kwikset Smartkey locks and all the older model Kwikset models were on sale for 25% off. Looks like they are replacing the entire Kwikset line to Smartkey . I live in S.E Michigan.

I'm gonna have to stop by Home Depot this weekend and check if the SmartScan has come in yet in my area. Hopefully they've stocked it now.

Alright, anyone looking at the photos, see anything that differentiates it from the Canadian ones?

And thanks for the info, guys, I appreciate it. I'll have to pick one up pre-DEFCON.

I bought one yesterday at Home Depot in Wilbraham Massachusetts, so they have arrived to the New England region.

They have them in several finishes, and several styles including deadbolt or knob set. They vary in price and the knob set can be had for $21.99 but I opted for the $25 brass single sided deadbolt which I prefer while picking. Double sided and fancy finishes were also available but the price just kept going up to the $49 range.

I do not have pics tonight, but expect to see some tomorrow.

30 minutes of picking, and I did not get the lock open. not bad.

I will say that I am impressed with the construction compared to a regular old generation Kwikset. The metal strike box was a nice touch, and it even has a 3rd hole to screw the strike box to a framing stud, not just into the door frame. very nice touch, kudos to Kwikset.

Just got my own Smart Key lock, yay! Finally came in stock here in SoCal. Bought the cheapest one I could find and took it home for dissection.

With the actual lock in my hand I now have a way better idea of how this thing work and I'm really pretty impressed.

I tried picking it for a few mins with no luck. Not too bad at all. It's kinda late and I'm in no mood to type anymore for tonight so I'll leave it at that for now.

I see no differences between my canadian model and the pics posted above. Though I cannot see how it assembles into the outer body shell to be sure.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

I've been playing with this thing for a few hours now but still can't quite see the flaw in this lock you spoke of zeke. But one thing I agree with you is that when you try picking this thing it feels all mushy. I also feel the machining on this lock has a much lower tolerance than the original Kwiksets.

Not just bump-proof, but squelchtone-proof and Eyes_Only-proof? Now that's impressive. :)

I guess I'll be heading out to Home Depot this weekend... I think I'm going to try to keep away from this and other related threads until I give the lock a go myself, before someone writes up a whole whitepaper detailing a weakness they've found
