It's a mini vertical mill with the sliding tables & up & down. 3 axis if you wish. It has an option to tilt the whole upper assembly to do diagonal cuts, but I don't use it, I just rotate the job in the vice.

p.s Thanks Awol :)

Nice work on that Abus!

But do you think the safety-pins behave differently when the lock is cut open?
Like spools and serrated pins might get caught?

I'm really jealous about your vertical mill!
Once upon a time, there was a lovely little sausage called `Baldrick', and it lived happily ever after.

I don't know really, they still feel the same to pick. I am using a 1.5mm cutter to do the pin channels now, instead of milling down till i expose the pin tubes.... its a lot more acurate using the smaller bit.

I'm selling them as collectors locks really, but I put it as practice because people find them easier on ebay.

The mill is awsome, truely it is! I spend a lot of time on it and it's almost addictive!

How do you go over the pin stacks without messing the pins or springs up?

You have to dismantle the lock first.

I know you do that for cylinders, but what about padlocks?

Same thing, dismantle that too. You'll have to so you don't hit the bolt in the places he drills.

I figured as much, just wasn't sure how he disassembled the abus and still had it turn out the way it did. That thing's amazing.

The Abus looks really pretty! Nice job! :D
In my opinion you could make quite a few bucks by selling these, they could be really helpful for beginners and nice to collect for experts...

But could you please, if it isn't to much trouble for you, place some pictures on which you dismantle the padlocks?

Cheers chaps :)

I'll post up another guide on how to dissasemble a padlock in full with pictures when I get a spare 5 minutes. My first one slipped down the forum because it wasn't stickied.... it wasn't in depth either really, it was from the first padlocks I took apart & I wasn't very good then. Since then I have learnt how to take it apart with no damage :)

Amazing job!

Had a question though. Since you cut below the sheer line it seems like rotating the plug would cause the lower pins to fall out once they loose tension from the top pins. How does this work if you don't mind me asking?

Nope, no loose parts ;)

It's hard to explain, but if you study the lock properly and closely you will see how the pins stay in :)
