I know this is kind of an old thread, but I wanted to share a little "moding" of my own that I did on a nice Medeco padlock. I got the padlock which has a Keymark cylinder in it, but wanted something a bit more pick resistant.

Image

I decided to use an Assa Twin V-10 that I pieced together from ebay purchases.

Image

Only problem was the tailpiece wasn't compatible…

Image

I know that I could probably buy a tail piece pre made and just install it (maybe, not sure), but I had an itch to do something with my own two hands. So I started to shape one of my own out of aluminum rod and a file.

Image

It took a little while, but I got it done in not too long.

Image

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two cylinders with the completed tailpiece on the Assa.

Image

Now I have a cool(er) padlock and it has a little touch of my own to it.

Hope you enjoyed seeing that. Would love any feedback. My one concern is that aluminum is a bit soft and I am not real sure it won't warp over time and use. I may have to try and make one out of a stronger metal. Any thoughts?

Thanks for checking it out!

Great job phrygianradar!

While I was reading your post my concern was about aluminium strength too. I think the right term is "metal fatigue". Even if your tailpiece works like a charm, and it can last years, it can eventually break. You may disassemble the padlock and check for wear signs after a few months of use, just to be on the safe side
And then there's that other thing, "galvanic corrosion". If the padlock is in a dry place you shouldn't worry about it.
If you want to do the extra mile, grab a brass rod and make another one

Cheers :)

Great job! Take a good lock, and make it better!

I agree about making your actuator out of brass or some other sturdier metal. I would no want to risk it failing in that lock.

Yeah, both you guys are right. I would not want to have to try to remove that core if something went wrong!

Nice work!

I completely agree with Gordon:

About the sturdiness of the metal, it's out of my league, I just wanna say that you made an incredible job on that
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

Just do a google check to make sure you won't get induced aluminum corrosion from dissimilar metals being in contact. Funny stuff can sometimes happen to, (I believe it is), aluminum when in contact with other metals.

I took the piece out; I was too worried about having the aluminum warp and not being able to get the lock open! I'm going to redo it out of the different metal at a later time...

Oh man, some lovely things on here! I especially like the Kaba Micro padlock.

I would like a Fichet 484 full stop, let alone having it in my car ignition!
