Loose combination dial?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Yeah it's a Group 2 lock.
I have so far got the first two numbers by ear!
The third one eludes me.

I'd call it luck , but i can get the first number pretty easy now, second is a little harder....it is a cutaway lock, but im not cheating !

I ain't takin this thing apart yet, so i really don't know what is making the sound, but sound there is !

It's a very very very, faint "clunk" when it passes over the wheel, the first 'clunk" is on the first wheel and the second one on the second wheel.
I ain't heard no "clunk" on the third wheel.

I have tried this several times, there is a "noise" there for sure.
It's pretty hard to hear, easy to pass it , as the tickin clock, the radio downstairs and the cat purring can drown it out.

I fugure ,if i keep at it i will be able to identify it , as while it's pretty faint, it's quite unique.

I had thought that there was no sound when it passed over the gate, it don't make much sense to me, but there is a sound.
Could some wiser person explain!

I am gonna have to take this thing apart and have a look see !

Im on the case!

This is fun :-)

Sorry Mr B , i did'nt see your post :-(
I am spinning this real slooooooow, so slow it's painfull :-)

I don't care what anyone says , there is a noise , and everytime i hear that noise i am over a gate .
The problem is i don't allways hear the noise!

I figure that's called "practice" ...and telling my cat to stop making a racket !

Thanks for all the input, i am well happy i bought this thing, hours of endless fun :-)

My limited knowledge on this subject is purely theoretical, but if I racell Mr. Blaze's paper, isn't the point of manipulation to feel for the contact point between the nose and the edges of the gate, then compare the distance from edge to edge over the various points of the dial? If I am to understand this correctly (and it has been a while since I read the paper) then wouldn't this be what you're hearing. In other words, the nose is striking the cam gate, not the wheel gate.

I could be way off base with this, but if I am, maybe I'll learn something new. :)

Maybe your hearing the wheels "pick up", with the combo set so that it
picks up with the previous gate under the fence? Does it happen
no matter what the combo is set to?

Hi guys, thanks for all the input.

The beauty of the cutaway is that i can look see what's goin on :-)

I was doin the Matt Blaze tut, i took a break and was just playing with it when i first noticed this "noise" .

What i am doin: I turn the dial back 4 times and stop at 0.
I then slowly trun it back till i hear this sound.
I look and see it's over the gate.
It's not the wheel pack pickin up.
It's not the cam , as the lever is up , off the wheels.

I have done this several times , it's allways over the gate on the first number.

If you listen up real carefull there are severall sounds not related to the lever , or the wheel pack. I don't know what they are .

I have yet to change the combination , i will try that tonight.

Right now i gotta go earn some money , the hard way :-)

Thanks!

I could do two things here , let this die quietly or be a man :-)

As Dell Boy might say, You plonker!

Well tonight i changed the combo, guess what ?

It does not make any noise on the new number, it still makes a noise on what was the old number.
There is something that is making a sound , it just happens it made it on what was the first two numbers :-(

There you go ! It's back to the drawing board again !

Thanks all , me goin over to the corner to sit with a dunce's hat on :-)

Well, at least we know that rules out using a stethoscope to pick up the numbers!

Combination lock manipulation

Postby kracker » 4 Jul 2005 16:26

I don't like to discourage inquisative minds, but I'm afraid you can listen till the cows come home, but you won't hear anything special when the wheel gate lines up.
Read up on manipulation and practice the tried and tested method, or else you will waste an awfull lot of time and get knowhere.
And by the way, a stethescope can help along the way, but an electric amplifier is better.
