I was watching the videos the doctor posted, is it safe to say the picking method is purely mechanical and does not require any need for knowing the states of the magnets, only the location of gates based on friction?

Yes mate, no prior knowledge is needed, but it is still picking in the traditional sense. You only care about the gates, sure.

I have one that just falls open when I touch pin 4 and lift pin 1, and another that I've opened once and is giving me problems now. I didn't realize they're full of spools.

I have several of these and I just can't believe they've got spool pins. I'm going to drill some out as soon as I can and see if it's true. They're just too easy to pick. Except one that I have is a black plastic coated 40mm Master, same shape and size of the 140...that particular one has some radical bitting and can surprisingly frustrate me due to oversetting of the deepest pin on some days.

I get feedback on one of mine that makes me believe there's at least one spool in there. I've also seen a YT video of someone cutting one up to reveal 3 spools and a serrated.

So its basically very easy to pick since you don't have to care about the magnets as well?. If thats the case, then the lock doesn't seem that safe or secure...
