What did you pick today?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

I think this has been my toughest lock to date (not including the ones that I could not open at all). It is a five pin lock that I believe has one spool. That one pin definitely behaved differently and seemed to have a deep set before being able to set it further. It took me about an hour to open. To be fair I have only done it once so it might be a fluke that I got it opened at all. I'll try again soon.

Picked 5 and 6 pin Schlages easily, both had spools, today testing out the Wendt 3. It failed on a Keymark and Corbin. It still trying though.

Moving right along! That "SECURITY" lock that you have labelled with "Security Pins?" That is a fair question. The answer is - sort of.

Want to know what is inside it? This thread shows you

Awesome post. Haha, nice to see what kind of fancy high security stuff is actually in there. I would have sworn that picture was out of focus.

Thanks Gordon.

Went back to some old locks. This is one of the oldest 5-pin ASSA locks I have. I can rake this consistently with a city rake, probably due to the very easy bitting, but I've had a lot of trouble SPPing it. Picked it today though!

Despite the wide open keyway and only standard pins, it's quite tricky; I think because of the very tight tolerances, so you end up playing this game:

My theory of why it's easier to rake is that, with a rake, I can set several pins at once, which works in this case. I have other similar locks with a much more challenging bitting (and keyway), where a rake doesn't work either...

A Corbin Russwin IC... to the Control shear line. It appears sort of random--whether the plug turns, or the control pins are picked and the plug comes out.
Used a homemade "DeForest" style half-diamond.

Nice picking and beautifully made deforest pick! Is that a hacksaw blade?

The DeForest puck started life as a 1/4" drain snake. I do not like the handle... still not tall enough and bends. I need to epoxy other pieces to the sides and use some Dip It.
The pick did turn out nicely. Thanks for the compliments.
