Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Its a medeco cylinder quite a challenge to pick and I won't reccommend it if you are just starting out. Search some of my older posts for details on how to pick if you are still up for the challenge.

Yes the lock has a sidebar as a secondary locking mechaism and it is technically classified as a "high security" lock.

Just to clarify, 51s is not a Medeco model number. If you ever ask a locksmith to order you a 51s medeco cylinder, he'll think you're crazy. Here's the 2012 catalog for you to look up cylinder part numbers http://medeco.com/Other/Medeco/Downloads/2012_Product_Catalog.pdf

51s is a UL Listing (Underwriters Laboratories) for certain Medeco cylinders that passed some tests to be called "high security" as written in the UL437 specifications.

I think it was a big mistake to keep stamping 51s on Medeco cylinders, it only leads to a broad confusion amongst consumers and locksmiths alike.

What padlock are you saying is hard to find? Medeco made several different padlock bodies over the years. Chubb is no longer in business, so if you find a Chubb branded Medeco BiAxial <-- by the way, it is spelled Biaxial, the cylinders will be used or new old stock.

The Chubb situation seems very confusing. Seems the brand is now owned by United Technologies with the name licenced to ASSA-Abloy for some products. The licence was withdrawn with respect to most locks except detention locks so Chubb is no longer in the business of non-detention locks. These other locks are now sold under the Yale and Union brands but with the same type numbers eg 1k11 for the popular 'Battleship' lever padlock. I wonder if Chubb branded Medeco cylinders were ever made in UK, or made in USA with the Chubb branding. As Chubb in UK and elsewhere do contract detention, prisoner escort etc work, presumably it helps this area of business if British made ASSA-Abloy detention locks continue to be Chubb branded. I have probably got it all wrong!
