There was a listing on evilBay that I was sorely tempted to jump on. Schlage Primus KIK cylinders (0 bitted) with two blanks each. They would fit the locks on my house, allowing a real key to work. But unlikely that someone skilled enough to pick that lock would be breaking into my house.

They kick the door in or break a window. In 30 years of locksmithing I can only recall one break in that was picking or bumping, the rest are unauthorized dupes, or other bypass or brute force attacks.

I agree. But my son wants a cool key on the doors. :)

Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

The unknown stuff on the pins makes it hard to SPP the lock open. The pins that american lock colors are sticky.

I'm not saying it's security but they took all the serrated pins and spool pins out of the US 5200 and just put 3 colored pins inside.

It feels thicker than just dye but whatever it is it acts just like a lock with built up rust or corrosion. Makes the pins sticky.

Call what you want.

So if it is a powder coating, most anything liquid sprayed into the lock would eventually cause the coating to have a reaction or separate.

When I open the brand new ones up 2 or 3 pins are fully coated with whatever it is.

American Lock has always had an odd concept of "lubrication" in my opinion/experience. That thick white/yellow paste they covered the locking cam in was usually a bigger hindrance to opening the lock than the return spring was. Maybe they are extending that concept to a pin coating to create varied resistance?

Exactly!!! Think about it... those pins fit pretty snug inside of the core and if you coat it with anything you will be creating resistance with the pins and the core. Really makes it quite hard to read when applying light pressure with a pick.

Does not matter if it's to make it easier to pin for the workers of master lock (they make american now) or if it is a tactic they decided to use... it actually works as security for SPP. Yes just like any lock security you can practice feeling for these dang sticky pins.
