What function does the keyhole on the inside have? I've seen holding cells that can be locked/unlocked from the inside, is this unusual compared to the norm?

no. holding cells are a different level of security and may need to be accessed via inside for some police type reason that some smartarse will soon tell.

Fair enough. I was talking about holding cells when the conversation was about actual jail cells. My bad.

This is the most common cell door lock used here and in the UK. Made by Chubb. Keyed access from the outside only. Used in both gaols and police stations.

Have you worked with any correctional facilities oldlock? It's interesting to hear that it would take 12 hours to saw through the bolt.

Yes. The bolts have free spinning hardened steel rollers, like the ones used in std chubb locks but on steriods. Note - it is designed to resist padsaws not angle grinders ! Also I would think at 12 hours you would have given up - not got through it ..........

At 12 hours, you're gonna get caught before you give up.

The prison ERT will have you up-ended and wrapped before you can blink.

I went through two different cell blocks, and each cell had a keyway on the inside as well as the outside. As I said, you could see through the keyway to the opposite side. I, too, thought it would be odd to give the prisoners access to the insides of the lock.
