It looks like the lock itself was the same as the Weiser Smart Key making it bump proof but still, the way that guy was trying to bump the lock didn't look right.

Howdy,

I just called Black & Decker's Kwikset/Weiser people and a nice lady told me they are not on sale yet in the US and she doesnt think they're even taking pre-orders yet from their regional sales people.

I did get a part number out of her. Kwikset part # 908

I'm not sure if this is for the Smartkey deadbolt or the SmartScan deadbolt

more to come, and I think I'll be paying a Canadian to mail me one of these locks soon. say.. Canadian friends, is your Weiser Smartkey just the smartkey deadbolt or is it the biometric version?

Thanks

Actually, Weiser and Kwikset are pretty much the same thing today. They are both owned by Black & Decker. Weiser's old mfg plant used to be in the same building as Falcon until 2001 when Ingersoll Rand who owns Schlage bought Falcon.

My impression on the phone with both companies suggests that Weiser == Kwikset and Falcon == Schlage. Both customer support numbers answer Kwikset or Schlage, and have no physical staff for Weiser or Falcon support. But since both companies used to mfg from the same building (and were probably the same company at one point), both of their conventional pin and key specifications are identical.

Just an interesting tidbit of history.

Eh? I'm looking at the chart in my LAB pinning kit and Kwikset and Weiser uses different specs.

they do use different specs for pinning, but they are both owned by kwikset which in turn is owned by black and decker and they are sharing a lot of designs lately.

Our Weiser rep is also our Kwikset rep.

Did anybody watch that video?!?!?

Fast forward up to 1:35.

Did anybody else here that?

He said "Kwikset makes a very safe lock!"

And he's a "safety expert"! He also has "Kwikset locks installed in his house".

Then he goes on how to say that their isn't a reason to buy that lock because he values a "bump-proof" lock!

Yeah I saw that too. He must have gotten some nice incentives to say that on camera by Kwikset or someone in Black & Decker.

Whoa neat diagram. :D I swear I'm dying from anticipation here. So I gather from that video of the news coverage this thing is scheduled for release in July now?

I just put in 4 of these (smartkeyed levers) on Tuesday for a lawyer's office. I was surprised the hardware was nice and heavy. The cylinders look like crap tho.. I'm curious to see how they handle heavy use.

How in the world did the deadbolts get ANSI 1 grading?

Look at them closely next time you have one in your hand. Then think on a very basic level of design. You will spot the same problem I did.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

they should have thought through some creative ways to fix that one.

edited by Schuyler. Clever :), but there's a reason the flaw isn't being addressed in specific terms on the open forums.
