Lever Locks--Question for our friends across the pond.

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Lever Locks--Question for our friends across the pond.

Postby devildog » 24 Oct 2005 18:47

Well, I've had my Falle-Safe kit for about a month now so I've got the lever picks already, and I suppose I just can't stand there being a lock out there that I don't have, so I really want to play with some lever locks now. So here's the lever lock equivalent of a total noob question: what kinds should I get to start with??

(ps--I searched for 'lever locks' and 'lever lock' and came up with zilch both times, so I think there's something screwy with the search function AGAIN  , but anyway...)

It seems that Chubb and Union are pretty popular from what I've read in LSS and seen picks/decoders for on Safe Ventures, but beyond that I just don't know. Obviously I'd like something good to start with that is also fairly popular, as lever locks go, that is. According to Safe Ventures, the Falle-Safe picks I've got can open all 2 and 3 lever locks, so of course it will have to limited to that. Are lever locks with only 2 or 3 levers even common at all? It just seems kinda screwy to only have 2 or 3 tumblers, like someone making a pin-tumbler with only 2 or 3 pins. I already know that there's something I'm missing here that makes a difference between a 2/3 lever lock and a 2/3 pin pin-tumbler lock, but I'd just like to know, specifically, what it is.

Try to find a Rosengren RKL 10 for a good starter lock devildog  .
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Chubb 3G107
Chubb 3G114E
Chubb 3G117
Legge yellow
Legge black
ERA 5 lever

I reccoment starting at the bottom of the list and working your way up.
You will most likely need a pin and cam for the Legge black and the 3 chubbs.

So the lever picks sent with the Falle kit are basically useless? That can't be right?

They are for basic and quick opening of 3-5 levers. I can get 5 levers with falle lever picks, so there is no reason why you shouldnt be able to.

Ok, here's what I'm looking at getting (it was about all I could find, too--not too many lever locks for sale by people willing to ship to U.S. :? ):

if you want to really laugh, then search for posts written by "TootieBell"
I am still laughing about that now

(sorry for minor thread hijack)

although you can bend two bits of wire (bikespokes work for this), and use one for the pick, and one for the tension wrench.

the pick will be shorter, and the tension wrench will be longer. Take the cover off your lock when you get it, and find the measurements for the tools that way, the tension wrench needs to be long enough to reach the stump which pulls the bolt back, and the pick needs to be long enough to push all the levers to their maximum height. Both bits of wire should be in the shape of an 'L'

Devildog - that lock you are buying has a curtain in it to stop you using 2-in-1 picks, and lever wires - you will need a curtain lockpick to do this (unless you remove the curtain, but then it still has the anti picking notches) to start look for one which is not British Standard.

Hope this was helpfull

In the 5 levers i have, all i need to do to disable the curtain is to use the tensioner pick and turn it to the open position.

THat looks like a good one to me devildog. I've got one just like that for starting on lever locks. Simple-ish, but my hands still cramp up on 'em.
