Kwikset Titan question

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Kwikset Titan question

Postby lockedin » 12 Jun 2006 17:23

I was just wondering if I can re-key Kwikset Titan type locks with a standard Kwikset rekeying kit, and what if any are the differences between them and a regular Kwikset lock (apart from how the keys look). Thanks in advance for your help.

The Kwikset Titan is a 6 pin lock instead of the normal 5 pin variety.

Other than that, everything else is the same other than a small clip that holds the cylinder in the housing, so parts out of a standard Kwikset repinning kit will work fine.

I'm assuming it comes with security pins? It would be such a waste to make a whole new lock with just one additional pin and no other advantages over normal Kwiksets.

The last time I took a Titan apart... I had all the ingredients for soup.

It appears that I had the contractor version with a homeowner change key designed to lockout the contractor key.

Most of the pin stacks contained an additional driver pin and there were tiny dustlike ball bearings in the lock that seem to have been designed to fall into a special well (during the homeowner change process?) at about 45 degress off center of the plug.

While rekeying the lock should be no real hassle if you treat it like a normal lock... restoring the contractor key status could be a nightmare.

You'll certainly have parts left over.

I have taken two Titan's apart and neither of them had security pins and neither were contractor or master pinned. Both had 6 stacks of standard pins. I have heard that Titan is now Titan UltraMax Security and do now contain security pins. The older Titans that I've had experience with, however, contain nothing special.
