question about keys

is there a method to how lock company's letter there keys. is it just first out goes in alphabetical order. like Yale how many past and present key way's do the have. it may be a lame question but i was just wondering how the determined what letter to give them.

Its helpful that you start to reconise the codes for certain locks but as to why they do it that way its neither here nor there,

I would tend to think that the higher the number the more restricted the keyway but i could be wrong,
