Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

american 30 padlock?

Postby unjust » 19 Dec 2006 19:21

so i picked up 3 keyed alike at the local homedespot for 10$ of these critters.

i understand that these should have 1-2 master keyed pin sets and maybe some security pins.

i can get 3 pins to set consistantly, but have -zero- luck on the other two.

any pointers? (i'm having issues taking this apart as i've misplaced my 1/8" allen which as best i can sort out from the manual is what to do to loose the plug, so i can't *quite* sort out what's in it yet, but shoudl have photos tomorrow if i remmeber to bring home a spare set of wrenches from werk and the desk isn't still on fire tomorrow am enough to preclude photobucket)

Can you say "buttload of serrated pins"?
All the Americans I've gotten my hands on had all sercurity pins and drivers. Serrated and spool.
Tough little suckers to pick. For me atleast.

Try using very light tension, and picking each pin just a little at a time. The serrated pins feel like regular pins setting. Very hard to tell the difference. If the driver pin is serrated, it'll throw you off because the key pin will fall down and jiggle like a set pin will.

Don't cheat by looking at the key, just keep at it.

good luck with it.

Exactly how many are in a buttload or does that depend on the size of said butt? :)

ok, so not only can i only get one pit to set now, i realzed it's a high-low pin series, but that doesn't matter because the front 2 pins don't ever set.

now, to add insult to injury with these 3 (keyed alike) locks i can't get the cylinder out of the lock.

it seems that where there are #2 philips or 1/8" hex in the manual this particular version (stamped "type 30") has a brass rivet for the top half of the security pin, or if it was screwed in has had that cut or hex neatly drilled out.

now, since i've 3 of these kids i'm inclined to drill one on the brass part (inside the hasp) to see what's inside, but has anyone a better/less desructive idea before i do that? i'm tempted to try hammering in a screwdriver to see if it's a drilled screw i can backout but am doubtful.
