Nice Cutaway of Brass Padlock (large pics)

Postby Deathadder » 4 Feb 2007 0:11

Ok, I've decided to dedicate today to making a cutaway of a nice little brass padlock i had lying around. I know it may seem a little rough around the part where the pin stacks are, but thats just because i haven't had time to sand and polish it today, ill finish that tomorrow or monday and post new pics.

This first picture is of the whole lock, keys included
Image

Second pic is the locking mechanism, pin stacks, and cylinder. This shows the 4 serrated pins, 1,3,4,5 and regular pin, 2
Image

Third and fourth show the shackle inside the lock in the unlocked and locked position
Image

Image

Fifth pic shows the key being turned and the locking mechanism activated, it also reveals the shear line, with the top pins showing through, and the retaining pin, the large pin sticking through the bottom
Image

Pic six is of the lock unlocked in my hand, to give you a reference of its size
Image

Lastly, the seventh picture, is a closeup of the pin stacks and the locking mechanism

When I get done with the finishing touches, ill post some pics here. This should probably turn out to be my best cutaway yet :D . Give criticism, but lets try to keep it constructive  .
It's ok guys, i have a really bad attention sp-wow look, a beach!

Nice. What did you use to cut through the brass?

 Must've taken a while to do that. As long as it works and you can see what's happening inside, I'd be happy with that. I just gotta get around to doing that for myself one day...

Done with most of the rough sanding today, I'll probably finish polishing it up tomorrow or Thursday. I also made a bumpkey for it out of the spare key it came with.

By the way, how much do you think this'll sell for on E-bay or here? Just curious...
:P

Dang so that's how you stop the pins falling out the plug when you turn to unlock - cut the side the the plug is turning *away* from.

I'm not kidding - this has bugged me for ages when making them, and this godly epithany never occured to me.

Nice cut-away - get some fine grade sandpaper and sand the little ho until you can see your virginity in it! :P

The shackle cut could be deeper, and the pin chamber cuts could be cleaned up to look smoother. Round off the edges where the metal level drops and it should look a lot better. None of this is strictly necesary, but it'll make your cut-away look nice IMHO.

Personally I'd cut away the plug so you can see the bottom pins, but i'm ready to admit you'd have to take all the pins out in order to do so.

I like it - padlock cut-aways aren't easy by any means, and yours looks cool and works so it's served a prupose at least. :)

Nice job, and certainly some dedication to do that all by hand. A v file for the pin chambers will help that roughness (or you oculd just stand that entire side down some more instead of cutting into the chambers like that). Sand paper definately brings a shine out, but you may want to try a finer file before going to sand paper or you might be at it for awhile:)

my grinder & drill are to heavy  i suppose i'll have to take more time on my locks instead of trying to do them in 5mins
