short answer: the cannot be picked by novices.
long(ish) answer: theoretically if you know how a mechanical lock works you can pick it, you just need a working brain, patience, more patience, lots of patience and a whole bunch of patience combined with the exact same amount of practice.
Oh look! it's 2016!

thanks to everyone for reading my post and not making me feel like a dumb *** for beaing new.I have picked a few things with the home made picks that I made from kitchen knives(which i enjoyed very much).I have picked all sizes of master locks(which is the easiest to pick),a few different deadbolts by tell, ace and kwikset, file cabinets, master combination lock with the numbers on the bottom,my truck doors(98 dodge ram),my van doors (84 ford econoline). The deadbolts and master locks I picked at work for the owner of my company and he was impressed and surprised how easy pin timbler locks are opened without a key.

Unjust
Its more than just spool pins. There are serrated bottom pins, and serrated spools as well. You can "cheat" a bit by spraying in a good helping of WD40 or some 3 in 1 oil, for whatever reason this helps get past the serrated pins. And if you do either, dont forget to flush that stuff out and put in a proper lubricant

Also, for an additional fun challenge, try picking an American that's clogged with dirt! I fought valiantly with one of these, and couldn't do it without first soaking the whole thing in acetone then giving it a liberal helping of WD40.
